IE8 now on track for 2009

The current beta version of IE8 was released in August. Speculators at that time said this meant a final version would be ready in 2008. However, Microsoft yesterday promised that the next version of IE8 will be a release candidate (RC) and will appear in the first quarter of 2009. That puts the new browser on track to ship for the first half of 2009, if a ship date can be deduced from previous development cycles for the browser.

  • Are Microsoft shareholders fed up? Submitted by Microsoft Subnet on Thu, 11/20/2008

Microsoft's annual shareholder's meeting occurred yesterday and given that the stock traded today at $17.50, its lowest point since 1998, you can imagine the tone among those that attended. Fed up might describe it, if this TechFlash blog post by a long-term shareholder is representative of the crowd. Michael McDonald bought 100,000 shares of MSFT in November, 2000, at a split-adjusted, average price of $36/share. (You read that right ... this cost him $3.6 million). This week he wrote:

  • Microsoft to offer free PC security tool coming in '09 Submitted by Microsoft Subnet on Tue, 11/18/2008

Microsoft will be offering a free, stripped-down version of its Windows Live OneCare PC security tool, code-named "Morro," in the second half of 2009. Microsoft will also discontinue retail sales of its Windows Live OneCare subscription service effective June 30, 2009. Windows Live OneCare includes features that are not directly related to fighting malware, such as printer sharing. Morro will include only the security portion of OneCare, software that fights viruses, spyware, rootkits and trojans. Morro will be available as a stand-alone download to support Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7. Microsoft intends for the tool to be used with security settings in Windows and Internet Explorer, which it says will give users a fairly complete, free security setup.

Storm Rumbles Across iPhone Plains by Mitchell Ashley

Well, the Blackberry Storm is finally here. I've had a chance to use both and here's my honest assessment of the Blackberry Storm compared to the iPhone. I know, you're probably wondering how I know what an iPhone is like after all the ranting I've done about Apple and it's black box iPhone and socialistic company behaviors towards end users. Well, I actually have both a Blackberry Storm and an iPhone. The Storm is now my main SmartPhone which I will use going forward. I...

SCMDM 2008: Microsoft goes after Mobile Management by Ron Barrett

Mobile devices for the Windows IT pro has always been a bit of a sore spot for me. I have spent a lot of time using Windows Mobile devices (since Pocket PC 2002) and let’s face it we have been getting our butts handed to us for a long time. Microsoft’s newest addition to the System Centers Management family changes that drastically. Systems Center Mobile Device Manager 2008 (SCMDM 2008) gives the IT manager the ability to manage Windows Mobile devices, secure those devices and most...

PowerShell: Using a ByteArray within an LDAP filter by Tyson Kopczynski

Today, I got a good question from a friend of mine.  Let's call my friend Steve, after all his name is Steve.  Anyhow, my friend wanted to return all users within a domain that did not have a ByteArray value of FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF for the logonHours attribute.  Naturally, I said to myself that is easy enough, here is your filter statement: !(logonHours=FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF) Yeah... that did not work.  So, I consulted my second brain: Google. ...

Security advisories from Microsoft and elsewhere

New vulnerability in Vista won't be patched until SP2 The most worrisome hole is the kind that doesn't need a user to be logged in with administrative rights. A researcher says he found such a hole in Windows Vista that could allow an attacker to load a PC up with unauthorized code. The hole depends on the device I/O control, which handles internal device communication. Researchers at Phion have found two different ways to cause a buffer...
